Are you ready to say goodbye to the CX-9 and hello to the all-new CX-90? It's been a long time coming, but the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-90 is already here and will likely hit dealerships in early 2023. This much-anticipated SUV has already created a buzz in the automotive world, and for a good reason. It has been several years since the CX-9's last complete redesign, and Mazda has been hard at work creating a sleek and advanced crossover SUV to take its place.

The CX-90 represents a seismic shift for the brand from a design and efficiency standpoint. At first glance, it's clear that the CX-90 is a larger and more robust option compared to its predecessor. But don't let its larger size fool you — the CX-90 boasts a powerful yet efficient engine, giving you the best of both worlds. With advanced technology and safety features, the CX-90 is an exciting addition to Mazda's lineup.

In this review, we'll take an in-depth look at the new CX-90 to see what makes this three-row crossover SUV stand out from the competition.

Powertrain, Transmission, and Performance

2023 Mazda CX-90

Under the hood, the CX-90 will likely offer a standard inline-six powertrain with a longitudinal-engine architecture. This setup offers improved balance and better weight distribution for a smoother driving experience. The CX-90 is also expected to offer a plug-in hybrid option, further improving its efficiency and environmental impact.

The SKYACTIV-X turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine is expected to have an integrated starter generator electric motor and a 48-volt battery pack, allowing for impressive power output. Although Mazda has not released official numbers, it's likely to be more powerful than the CX-9's turbo-four engine, which currently offers up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

The CX-90 plug-in hybrid will likely have a similar powertrain setup as the current CX-9, with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine and an electric motor paired with a 17.8 kWh battery pack. This mill is expected to churn out an impressive 322 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque if it follows in the CX-9's footsteps. However, rumor has it that it'll be tuned to surpass those numbers.

Both powertrain options will likely come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, offering smooth and seamless shifts. Plus, much like its predecessor, the CX-90 will likely only offer all-wheel drive as a standard option, providing added stability and control on various road conditions.

On the performance front, the CX-90 is expected to deliver a dynamic and agile driving experience with its new powertrain options. It should also offer better fuel economy than the CX-9 thanks to its increased efficiency and a possible hybrid option. Although a bit heavier, the CX-90 is expected to have a zero to 62 mph time of around six seconds, which is a bit faster than the CX-9's currently clocked time of 7.1 seconds.

Interior Design and Cargo Capacity

The CX-90's larger size will translate to more interior space and comfort for passengers. The three-row crossover is expected to offer comfortable seating for up to seven people, with an optional second-row captain's chairs setup for added luxury. The seats should also come wrapped in soft Nappa leather, along with seat heating and ventilation for added comfort. A panoramic moonroof will likely be offered as an option, allowing for more natural light and a spacious feel in the cabin.

Similar to the CX-60, the CX-90 should also be available with a personalization system, allowing drivers to personalize their driving experience with pre-configured settings for the steering wheel and seat position, climate control, and audio preferences. This personalization system may include facial recognition technology for added convenience and security.

In terms of cargo space, the CX-90 is expected to offer a generous amount of room for all your storage needs. The second and third rows will likely fold flat, providing more cargo capacity than the current CX-9's 14.4 cubic feet with all seats in use and 38.2 cubic feet with the third row folded down. So, the CX-90 could solve all your storage woes when it comes to road trips and daily errands.

Exterior Design

The CX-90 is anticipated to have a bold and sophisticated exterior design, staying true to Mazda's KODO design language. The three-row crossover will likely have a prominent grille with new touches, such as daytime running lights that extend into the grille. The longer body should also create a more muscular and dynamic appearance, adding to its overall sophistication. Mazda has yet to release any information on exterior color options, but we can expect to see a variety of new and classic hues, along with a possible two-tone option. So, you'll have plenty of options for personalizing your new CX-90.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Regarding the CX-90's infotainment system, Mazda is expected to offer its latest and greatest technology, including an updated infotainment system with a larger standard touch-screen display than the CX-9's 10.3-inch screen. The system should also come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and multiple USB ports for all your connectivity needs.

The Mazda Connected Services suite should also come standard, offering a variety of useful features, such as emergency assistance, remote locking and unlocking, and a stolen vehicle locator. Expect nothing less than a modern and connected experience in the CX-90.

Safety Features and Driver Assistance Technology

As a high-end SUV, the CX-90 will likely come with a plethora of advanced safety features and driver assistance technology. Standard offerings could include blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The CX-90 might also offer optional features, such as a 360-degree camera system and a heads-up display for added convenience and safety while driving. With Mazda's i-Activsense technology, the CX-90 could offer even more advanced driver assistance options, such as Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Advanced Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian detection, and traffic sign recognition.

Overall, the 2023 Mazda CX-90 is shaping up to be a bold and sophisticated three-row SUV that offers a luxurious and personalized driving experience. This SUV should definitely be on your radar if you're in the market for a high-end crossover. North End Mazda will be among the first dealerships in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, to offer the 2023 CX-90, so keep an eye out for its arrival.
